Migration and health - Online short films and talk

How does migration shape a person’s health and well-being? What happens when people are forced to leave home – by war, climate change or political instability – and face long journeys, uncertain futures and restrictive immigration systems?
Join us on the 8th of May for an evening of short films exploring these urgent questions. Through personal, powerful stories, we dive into the complex realities of migration and how it affects mental, physical and social health.
Organised by the Global Health Film Days and the Dutch Global Health Film Festival, this online event invites you to experience diverse perspectives from around the world and engage in meaningful reflection.
We’ll screen 4 short films selected from an international line-up, covering themes such as:
- the emotional toll of displacement and separation
- navigating asylum procedures and legal uncertainty
- resilience and resistance in the face of marginalisation
- the intersection of environment, policy and migrant health
The screenings will be followed by a panel and open discussion – a space to reflect, ask questions and connect the stories to broader global health challenges. Our line-up of speakers will be:
- Sara Sahba – Resident in pediatrics and co-founder of the National Expertise Centre on Health and Healthcare for refugee children in the Netherlands (EKANN)
- Hussain Jafari – Psychologist and coordinator of the Life Skills programme at the Dutch Red Cross, providing workshops to empower refugees to protect their mental and physical health
- Maria Marti Castaner – Associate professor in public mental health at the Centre for Migration, Ethnicity and Health, University of Copenhagen and clinical psychologist.
- Megan Milota (moderator) – Associate professor in narrative medicine at Julius Center for Health Sciences and Primary Care, UMC Utrecht
