4EU+ Urban Health Case Challenge

On 23-27 November 2020, 4EU+ University Alliance and the School of Global Health at University of Copenhagen hosted a new case challenge for bachelor, master's and PhD students. 68 students from eight different universities across Europe competed to come up with the best solution to a challenge on community resilience in times of COVID-19.

The Urban Health Case Challenge (UHCC) is a new initiative under the 4EU+ University Alliance, launched to address the many urban changes in relation to health and demographic transformation in our growing urban environments. Due to the worldwide COVID-19 crisis, this year’s case challenge focused on community resilience in times of the pandemic.

The case question was:

  • In your city, design a community intervention that strengthens resilience among vulnerable populations to overcome negative implications of COVID-19 preventive measures

The aim of the UHCC is to strengthen university students’ competencies and engagement in solutions to real-world cases through employment of practical, theoretical, innovative and interdisciplinary thinking. Students will be given a unique opportunity to work in mixed teams, to network and learn from and with each other, faculty, the external case provider and other stakeholders.

The case provider in 2020

This case provider was Gehl Architects - a people centered urban research and design consulting firm based in Copenhagen with offices in New York and San Francisco. They specialise in improving the quality of urban life by re-orienting city design towards the inhabitants. They have participated in projects in 250 cities around the world and they recently studied people’s behaviour in urban settings during the COVID-19 pandemic.

What is a case challenge?

In a case challenge (also often called a case competition) the participating student teams strive to develop the best solution to a real-world issue presented by a business or organisation within a limited time-span. Each team presents their solution in front of an expert jury at a pitching session on the last day of the case challenge. All teams receive pitch training to prepare them for the final presentation.
