PhD Studentships in Hospitality, Tourism, and Planetary Health

The Sunway Centre for Planetary Health (SCPH) and the Sunway University School of Hospitality and Service Management (SHSM) are jointly launching a new PhD studentship in hospitality and tourism with a focus on planetary healthThe SCPH is the first of its kind in Asia and the Pacific and is led by Executive Director, Professor Tan Sri Dr. Jemilah Mahmood, and Chief Planetary Health Scientist, Associate Professor Dr. Renzo Guinto.

According to the 2015 Lancet Commission report:

“Planetary health is the achievement of the highest attainable standard of health, wellbeing, and equity worldwide through judicious attention to the human systems—political, economic, and social—that shape the future of humanity and the Earth’s natural systems that define the safe environmental limits within which humanity can flourish. Put simply, planetary health is the health of human civilisation and the state of the natural systems on which it depends.”

Successful applicants will enroll in the three-year PhD in Hospitality and Tourism program at SHSM and gain a concentration in planetary health.

Co-supervised by faculty from SHSM, SCPH, and other related schools as well as important local and international institutions, students will work on a specific topic related to hospitality and tourism that connects to one of the five priority themes of SCPH:
Preventing the next pandemic
Tackling the climate emergency
Creating healthy cities
Achieving sustainable food systems
Promoting fairer economies

In addition to receiving rigorous research training from the faculty, PhD students will also participate in different activities of SCPH to advancthe emerging field of planetary health in Asia and the Pacific.

Minimum Requirements:
A Master’s Degree (with CGPA ≥ 3.50 or its equivalentAND published one SCOPUS indexed article, OR a First-Class Honors Bachelor Degree (with CGPA ≥ 3.67 or its equivalentin hospitality and tourism or any related field
Excellent proficiency in English (written and spoken)
Highly motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision

RM 3,000 monthly stipend/living allowance
