We are looking for new interns to Malawi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Senegal and Guinea for the Fall of 2019
Internships with the Danish Red Cross in Africa
Are you interested in international development and emergency response? Do you have good reporting and communication skills, and are you ready to move to Africa and get an insight into Danish Red Cross’ international activities? If yes, then you might be our new intern at one of our offices in Africa. Right now, we are looking for new interns to Malawi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Senegal and Guinea for the Fall of 2019 from August to January.
The Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is the largest humanitarian organization in the world and for 150 years we have helped people through crisis, wars and disasters. The Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement has a unique position and mandate to provide aid regardless of nationality, race or political views. We currently count 19 million volunteers in 190 countries. When disaster strikes we are there. Join us. Together we can make a world of difference.
We expect you to work independently, be action driven and effective. You are resourceful, flexible, interested in humanitarian development and want to be part of the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement. We expect you to have an interest in working closely with local actors, and that you have the skills to engage in different project activities. We imagine that you through your studies have knowledge of international development work and/or insight into partnership projects. It is an advantage if you have experience working with volunteers or are familiar with working in Africa.
The professional and academic background needed for the internships are:
- Enrollment in relevant Master programme, e.g. social science, political science, African studies, development studies or similar.
- Fluency in both Danish and English is a necessity. French is a requirement for internships in West Africa.
- Experience from working with organizational development involving volunteers as well as programme design and monitoring
- Excellent report writing and communication skills to be disseminated in a professional, but not academic language
- Cultural sensitivity and experience in participatory methods and planning of fieldwork.
- Knowledge of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is an advantage
As a person, you are result oriented with a cultural sensitivity. You have an ability to both listen and facilitate dialogues with a flexible approach, adapting your way of working depending on the culture and capacities.
As an intern with the Danish Red Cross in Africa, you will get the chance to gain first-hand experience of what it is like to work for the world’s largest humanitarian organization. You will get to work alongside professionals who are experts in their field as well as valuable and relevant work experience within a dynamic workplace. At the same time, an internship with the Danish Red Cross in Africa will provide you with an opportunity to apply what you have learned during your academic programme in a challenging and inspiring setting.
The internships begin in August and end in January and run for 5 months. The weekly working hours are 37. The internship is unpaid. However, accommodation and insurance is covered by the Danish Red Cross. Before arriving at the internship, a thorough training will be undertaken in Denmark and online.
How to apply
Send your CV and an application by 13 April 2019. In your application, you need to make it clear how you are prioritizing the countries. You should write the prioritizing below the title of your application, where you list the above-mentioned countries with 1 - Country X (1 being your first priority). The priority list does not ensure your destination as the application to the offices is viewed as an application to the Danish Red Cross in the Africa region and not a specific country. However, we want to know your priorities.
