The Shock of Attention: Discoveries of Narrative Medicine

The Centre for Medical Science and Technology Studies,
University of Copenhagen, is delighted to announce the seminar.

Rita Charon, MD & PhD

Columbia University, New York City

Rita Charon is professor of medicine and executive director of the Program in Narrative Medicine at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, New York City. As a general internist and literary scholar she has, with her colleagues at Columbia, created the field of Narrative Medicine.

Attention—that state of undiluted commitment by a witness to what is beheld—can shock the witness into discovery. Whether the beheld is a person, a painting, a poem, or a partita, the attentive witness donates the self in a humble absorption of the presence of the beheld. As one of the three movements of narrative medicine, attention forms the bedrock for an effective and respectful health care, transformative for all its participants.
