PhD Scholarship at Steno Diabetes Centre
PhD Project: The inflammatory footprint of early stages of diabetic complications. The ADDITION-PRO study
PhD Position
A new PhD position is available for a research project focusing on the interaction between adipokines and low-grade inflammation in determining progression to diabetes and the early stages of diabetic complications in high-diabetes-risk individuals. The project will be under-taken at Steno Diabetes Center, Gentofte in collaboration with the Institute for Public Health, Division of General Medicine, Århus University.
Project
This project is part of the ADDITION-PRO study, a sub-study of the international ADDITION study. Participants, who had IFG / IGT or high diabetes risk at the baseline examination, are being invited to a follow-up examination in 2009/2010 to assess their current glycemic status, as well as cardiovascular risk and subclinical atherosclerosis. Serum and urine samples are collected and stored in a biobank. The aim of this research project is to assess key markers of adipocyte metabolism and low grade inflammation as well as a proteomic profile in stored serum samples in order to study the impact of these processes on the development of diabetes and the early stages of its complications.
The PhD student will work with other researchers in the ADDITION-PRO study to finalize the current follow-up round in 2010, plan and coordinate the measurements in biobank samples, perform the epidemiological analyses, and draft the scientific reports that form the basis for the PhD thesis.
The PhD student will be part of the Diabetes Epidemiology research group at Steno Diabetes Center. The group's research focuses on the impact of key mechanisms of diabetes patho-physiology at the population level, screening for type 2 diabetes and description of the burden of diabetes and diabetes-related complications. The group works with well-established cohorts and databases nationally and internationally, and collaborates intensively with neighbouring disciplines. The team consists of doctors, PhD students, masters' students, statisticians and senior researchers.
Qualifications
The applicant must have an academic background in biology, medicine, health sciences or a closely related field. The applicant should have strong analytical and organizational skills, the ability to identify and solve both practical and academic problems, and have a keen interest in clinical diabetes epidemiology. This project offers an excellent opportunity to expand a clinical or academic career with knowledge, skills and experience in diabetes epidemiology.
