Intensified efforts against malaria are working
The last 10 years' focused efforts against malaria are working, concludes the new World Malaria Report by the WHO released on 13 December. In the past decade there has been a decline of more than 25 percent in the number of deaths caused by malaria, and a 33 percent reduction in Africa, according to the report.
However, the report also points out that the efforts must be upheld and intensified and that a projected shortfall in funding for the global anti-malaria campaign threatens these positive gains.
At the University of Copenhagen, Centre for Medical Parasitology, researchers are working to fight malaria in several ways, e.g. through monitoring of drug resistance, improvement of rapid diagnostic tests and development of a combi-vaccine against maternal malaria and HPV virus.
