Pre-departure workshop and handbook for students going abroad

On Friday June 8th, the first "pre-departure training" workshop for students going abroad was held, with students attending from public health, anthropology and medicine. The feedback from the students was very positive and they reported they felt much more prepared for their placement abroad after attending the workshop. They also suggested pre-departure training to be mandatory.

The workshop was held as a first edition and might become a regular workshop of the school. It will be offered again to the students of the Summer School on International Health and the Summer School on Global Health Challenges in August. Registration is still open for those workshops.

The workshop is part of a wider project to prepare students better before they go abroad, in order to have safer and more productive placements about. The pillars of pre-departure training are personal health, travel safety, cultural competency, linguistic competency and ethical considerations

And handbook for students going abroad

Copenhagen School of Global Health has also developed a guide for students who are going on placements in a low-and-middle income country.

The handbook collects important information, ranging from applying for ethical clearance and medical advice to practical details about what to put in your suitcase. You can find the handbook (pdf) on http://globalhealth.ku.dk/students/handbook/.
