Internship 'International Projects Assistant' at Refugee Rescue

About the organization

Refugee Rescue is a sea rescue charity and humanitarian organization that was initiated in Winter 2015 in response to over 1 million refugees fleeing war and persecution who were forced to cross the Aegean Sea from Turkey to the island of Lesvos, where thousands lost their lives at sea.

Refugee Rescuee's ex RNLI Atlantic 75 Rescue boat ‘Mo Chara’ (‘My Friend’ in Irish) is fully operating in Lesvos with a rotating crew of skilled volunteers that include experienced skippers, sea rescue swimmers and SAR professionals. The team of the organization provides assistance and give help to refugees in this dangerous situation, to reach the shores safely.  It is a flexible team who goes where the need is; currently the are stationed in the north Lesvos (Skala Sykamnias) for the second time and have been previously in the south in the capital Mytilini.

Since the ‘Turkey Deal’ there are less SAR teams at sea and NGO’s on the ground. Refugee Rescue is heavily relied on to ensure that refugees are not put in any more danger and have care and protection at sea. Even though there are currently less numbers of refugee boats crossing, people are so desperate they still do come and in even more dangerous conditions.  Refugee Rescue aims to be ready to help and to ultimately stop any more deaths at sea.

Due to the fall in humanitarian aid on the shore Refugee Rescue has reinstalled a land crew. This mean the organization can ‘spot’ at night to ensure that the refugees coming across can be seen, relaying this information to the SAR boat and other teams. This is an important development in the operations to help refugees and means an expansion in the operations on the ground.

The organization is managed remotely - Refugee Rescue’s Trustee’s are base in the U.K. and the Managing Director’s (MD) office is based in Copenhagen. Refugee Rescue is looking to expand the administrative team in Copenhagen. As a new NGO that was born out of reaction to a humanitarian disaster, they are now at a stage where want to stabilize and grow the infrastructure of the charity.
