Objectives:
At the end of the course the students will be able to:

Understand and use key concepts within and discuss disaster risk reduction from a system perspective

Demonstrate knowledge of methods and tools for risk analysis and risk evaluation, including methods for identification and analysis of hazards and vulnerabilities

Conduct basic risk analysis and understand the complexity of evaluating risks in national/ international and public/private sectors.

Demonstrate knowledge of how to , based on risk analysis and evaluations, identify, analyse, prioritise, plan, implement and evaluate activities to reduce risks, either by reducing the probability of disasters (prevention) or by reducing their possible consequences beforehand (mitigation)

Identify and discuss different general models for how to plan and prepare effective preparedness for managing the consequences of future disasters

Demonstrate knowledge about strategies and general models for capacity development at different levels.
Content:
The students will be introduced to the concept of risk, to different methods for risk analysis and to have a capacity approach to risk. They will also learn to perform a risk mapping to initiate risk reduction measures. Methods of risk evaluation and system perspectives on disaster risk reduction will be presented and discussed. Important international actors in the domain are also presented and described. The students will work on two case-studies during the course, and will present these cases in groups.
Furthermore the students will
be introduced to how risk assessment is related to preparedness. Key aspects of
preparedness will be presented together with legal and institutional frameworks
for disaster management. The issue of capacity development for disaster
management will be discussed and a participatory approach to the issue will be
presented.
Methods:
A combination of lectures, group work,
case-studies, presentations and discussions in plenary. The main emphasis will
be on participatory approaches.
Assessment Procedures:
The assessment will be based on two
case-studies and reflections on other case-studies presented in class. Both
case-studies and reflections will be uploaded individually to the students'
individual portfolio on the it-platform absalon.
Evaluation: passed/failed. Internal evaluation
